Babies grow in blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments. And, while preventive measures have helped, almost one in five children under the age of five have experienced tooth decay.1 So it's important to be diligent and give your baby the foundation for a lifetime of great dental health. We'll help you get started with these tips for your baby's very first dental visit.

When Do Babies Go to the Dentist?

When your baby is between six and 12 months old, you'll start to see their first teeth come in. As soon as the first tooth appears, it's a good idea to make your baby's first dental appointment.2 The dentist can check for tooth decay. But even more important, this first visit gives you a chance to introduce your child to the dental office early and create a positive experience.

Here are a few tips that can help your baby begin to build trust and confidence for future happy dental visits.

Prepare for Baby's First Visit to the Dentist

You and your dentist can make baby's first dental visit fun. It's a new place, with new sights and sounds. To help ensure that creates excitement, not anxiety, take these steps to build your baby's comfort and confidence.

  1. Before your visit, set the tone by talking with your baby about what's going to happen. Keep your voice and words positive.
  2. Help your baby practice opening and closing their mouth with the “say Ahhhh!" game.
  3. Share books and videos that help your baby become familiar with the dentist before their appointment.
  4. Prepare a list of questions to ask during the exam.
  5. Once you're at the dentist's office, help your baby safely explore all the fun and cool stuff there. You can even ask the dental team if your little one can go for a “ride" in the dental chair!

What to Expect from Baby's First Dental Exam

Don't worry if your baby wiggles or can't sit still. You can sit in the dental chair and hold your baby if they aren't able or don't want to sit alone. The dentist will check for oral injuries, tooth decay and other issues, then clean your child's teeth. Lastly, they'll provide tips on at-home care and hygiene to put your baby on the path to great dental health.

More Tips for Baby's First Dental Visit

  1. If your baby is used to napping at a certain time, schedule the dentist appointment for a time when they've rested and are more cooperative.
  2. Provide your baby with a light meal and brush their teeth before the visit so they're not hungry — or cranky.
  3. Save snacks for after the visit, so the dentist can have a clear view of your baby's teeth during the exam.
  4. If your little one becomes upset, work with your dental team to calm them so the appointment is a happier experience for everyone.

For extra peace of mind, consider following these four steps for finding the right dentist for everyone in your family.
