BBL preparation
Staying well-hydrated and having something to eat before your appointment can prevent feelings of lightheadedness or queasiness during the procedure. Your doctor will give you specific instructions for preparation based on your medical history and the specific procedure. Common recommendations include:
- Avoiding alcohol for at least 48 hours before your appointment to minimize bruising and swelling
- Pausing certain medications or supplements, such as NSAIDs or blood thinners, as these can affect clotting and increase bleeding
- Stopping smoking ahead of time, as smoking can interfere with healing and circulation
Before the procedure, you’ll change into a surgical gown and be asked to lie on your stomach to allow your surgeon easy access to the treatment areas.
BBL procedure
If you're under general anesthesia — which is most common — you’ll be asleep during the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia with numbing medication may be used, allowing you to remain awake.2
The first part of the procedure focuses on removing fat from areas like your stomach, lower back, hips or thighs. - Dark-colored lesions on gluteal muscle

- Yellow or green discharge from the injection sites
The most serious complication is pulmonary fat embolism (PFE), where fat enters the bloodstream. Symptoms include:

- Fast heart rate (above 100 beats per minute)
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Red or purple rash on the skin (petechiae)
