Using the best skin care products can help keep your skin looking young and healthy for as long as possible. But with so many different types of skin care products available in stores and online promising healthy, supple-looking skin, how do you determine which ones are best for you?

Keep these factors in mind when shopping for skin care products so you know how to choose the best products for your needs — and enjoy the results you expect and want.

  1. Age. Different life stages call for different types of products. Look for skin care products that correspond with your age and life stage. For instance, products that treat acne in teens contain very different types of ingredients than skin care products that help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and sun damage, such as anti-aging creams and serums.
  2. Skin tone. Skin complexions that are fair, medium or dark require different types of products. For instance, fair skin is likely to burn faster with sun exposure compared to an olive skin tone or darker complexion.
  3. Skin type. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to look for skin care products with minimal ingredients to avoid irritating your skin, and avoid products with alcohol and fragrance. If you have dry skin, you might benefit from products in an ointment or cream form, which can soothe dry skin better than a lotion. Oily skin, on the other hand, still needs moisture, but is better suited for oil-free products that won’t clog pores.
  4. Skin problems. Do you have skin problems like eczema, recurring acne, age spots or puffy skin around your eyes? Look for products with ingredients that address these specific skin concerns.
  5. Lifestyle factors. The condition of your skin can be impacted by personal habits, such as smoking. Likewise, excessive sun exposure may call for a heavier moisturizer to combat the effects of dry skin. Certain medications and even the type of climate you live in can impact your skin care product considerations.
  6. Skin care ingredients. Read the label. Active ingredients are listed in order of concentration, followed by inactive ingredients. Aim for skin care products with natural ingredients and try to avoid artificial colors or fragrances which can irritate your skin. Skin care moisturizers and lip balms should contain sunscreen to act as a barrier against UV rays. Finally, be sure to use products by their expiration date, since expired skin care products may contain bacteria that can lead to skin irritations and infections.

Build a skin care routine

To help protect your skin and maximize the results of your skin care products, it’s best to establish and follow a daily skin care routine. Keep in mind that some products, such as anti-aging creams, may take several weeks for results to appear. If you’re not seeing the results you want with your skin care products, or you have questions about the best skin care products for your skin, consult with a dermatologist who can make appropriate recommendations based on your specific skin type and individual needs.
