Key Takeaways

  • Streamline front-office workflows and speed to lead with automation tools that support structured lead routing, reduce lost inquiries and enable faster follow-up.
  • Introduce financing before the first consultation so patients and clients can explore payment options early and arrive prepared to move forward.
  • Practices that accept CareCredit can help patients manage costs over time, and practices receive payment in two business days.

Because plastic surgery and other cosmetic treatments can be considered elective procedures and therefore not covered by health insurance, patients may be especially focused on affordability when deciding whether to move forward with recommended care. In Synchrony’s Healthcare Journey Research Consumers and Providers study, 64% of medical and day spa patients and clients surveyed said cost is the No. 1 barrier to pursuing services.1

Practices looking to grow should consider addressing payment concerns throughout the patient financial journey. Strategies that can increase conversions and help patients follow through on recommended and preferred care include introducing financing options prior to the first consultation and employing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to increase efficiency and manage patient expectations.

The New Reality for Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Practice Growth

Plastic surgery and cosmetic practices are operating in a flat to slow-growth environment. According to the latest data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), practices are seeing no significant increase in procedures — but also no major decrease.2

How preferred procedures are shifting

Even as patients continue to seek plastic surgery and cosmetic services, many are interested in a different mix of procedures. For example, many are choosing treatments to remove excess skin following GLP-1 medication use. The ASPS survey found that 41% of consumers prescribed GLP-1 medications for weight loss are considering non-surgical procedures and 39% are considering surgical procedures.2

Another emerging trend is treatments focused on refinement and preservation, not a total surgical transformation.3

A new pathway to practice growth

For plastic surgery and cosmetic practices, growth no longer means chasing volume. In addition to reacting to consumer preferences, practices should consider focusing on operational excellence. That means responding faster to patient inquiries, converting interest into booked services and increasing revenue per hour.

Improving Speed to Lead and Front-Office Efficiency

AI tools and systems are rapidly becoming mainstays in business offices, including plastic surgery and cosmetic practices that are adopting AI to improve speed to lead and streamline front-office workflows.

Common uses of AI in physician practices

According to the American Medical Association’s 2026 Physician Survey on Augmented Intelligence, 78% of physicians surveyed said AI tools are helpful for work efficiency.4

The ways physicians said they are using AI include:4

  • Creation of discharge instructions, care plans and/or progress notes (30%)
  • Documentation of billing codes, medical charts or visit notes (28%)
  • Generation of draft responses to patient portal messages (19%)

Using AI to start the patient journey

AI can help plastic surgery and cosmetic providers respond quickly and easily to new leads, initial consultation requests and inquiries about costs. Capturing potential patients before they move on to another provider can result in fewer lost leads and more booked consultations.

When a potential patient calls, emails or texts the practice, automation can send an immediate acknowledgement and offer the next best step (schedule, request a callback or view payment options). With AI tools, practices can incorporate structured lead routing and a consistent follow-up cadence and introduce financing options from the outset, potentially increasing patient conversion rates.

To stay compliant and protect the patient experience, configure AI to handle administrative tasks and FAQs (scheduling, hours, general pricing factors and payment options) and route clinical questions or complex cases to trained staff.

What “speed-to-lead” looks like in practice

  • Respond within minutes to web forms, texts and missed calls with a branded message and a next-step prompt (e.g., “Book a consult,” “Request pricing range,” “Ask a question”).
  • Route leads automatically by procedure type, provider location or availability, so inquiries aren’t stuck in a general inbox.
  • Capture key details up front (procedure of interest, timeframe, preferred contact method, budget questions) and push them into the practice’s CRM/scheduling workflow.
  • Trigger same day + next day follow-up until the consult is booked or the lead opts out.

Early Financing Conversations Can Prevent Drop-off

Costs can add up quickly, especially when care spans multiple appointments and add-on treatments. In fact, according to CareCredit’s Out-of-Pocket Healthcare Expenses report, among those who had cosmetic procedures or care in the past 12 months, 93% had out-of-pocket costs (averaging $1,606). Among those who had spa treatments, 91% had out-of-pocket costs (averaging $679).5

As a result, patients may face cost concerns regarding how they will pay for care. They also may encounter additional costs from add-on treatments, recommended products, treatment plan revisions and follow-up or maintenance appointments to achieve desired outcomes.

If costs and payment options aren’t addressed early, patients may delay or disengage from treatment. According to the healthcare journey study by Synchrony, 57% of cosmetic and plastic surgery patients surveyed said they delay or push off care due to expenses or out-of-pocket costs.1

Pre-Consultation Financing: What It Is

Offering financing information in advance of the first appointment — by sending patients a financing link before the initial consultation — can reduce patient concerns about paying for treatment. Plastic surgery and cosmetic practices can include pre-consultation financing information in the appointment confirmation email or text or in a “what to expect” packet. AI tools can make this an automatic part of the process.

The benefits of pre-consultation financing

When patients have time to review costs and payment options before arriving at their appointment, that transparency can ease cost concerns and reduce pressure to make a split-second decision when they are at your office.

They have the option to see if they prequalify for financing ahead of their visit. By sending cost and financing information in advance, you can keep the consultation focused on the comprehensive treatment plan and outcomes. These proactive, timely communications demonstrate that you understand this is a significant financial decision.

Financing can drive patient choice

It’s important to note that financing adoption varies widely from practice to practice. Outcomes aren’t driven solely by patient demand; they’re influenced by how consistently affordability is incorporated into the patient journey.

According to the patient journey study by Synchrony, 72% of cosmetic and plastic surgery patients surveyed said being offered a variety of payment options — including special financing — is an important factor when they are deciding where to go for care.1 Make it easy on your patients by giving them financing information up front.

How Automation Supports the Patient Journey

AI tools can automate repetitive tasks, introduce financing and create a frictionless workflow throughout the patient journey from initial consultation to treatment. Below are five steps to consider to embed automation and financing into the journey — without adding work for the front desk.

  • Step 1: Inquiry to consult booking. Auto-acknowledge inquiries, route by procedure/provider and send a clear CTA (book now/request callback). Share pricing factors and payment options when appropriate.
  • Step 2: Pre-consultation. Send a financing link prior to a consultation in the confirmation of “what to expect” message, so the patient or client can explore pay-over-time options and (if available) see if they prequalify quickly and easily, helping them better understand the scope of treatment they can afford.
  • Step 3: Consultation to plan and pricing. Present one to three treatment options, including outcomes, timeline and clear pricing. Include a monthly payment example alongside each plan.
  • Step 4: Scheduling. Before the patient or client leaves the office, confirm the next step: schedule date(s), deposit requirements (if any) and how they’ll complete their chosen payment option.
  • Step 5: Pre-procedure. Use AI tools to send reminders via the patient’s preferred communication channel and restate plan, expected costs and payment approach to reduce no-shows and last-minute cancellations.

Clear Financing Options Can Open Doors for New Offerings

Presenting a clear path to pay for plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures can help patients move forward with recommended care. It can also lead patients to book higher-value offerings such as non-surgical services, memberships, skin care bundles and wellness treatments. In the healthcare journey study by Synchrony, 83% of cosmetic and plastic surgery patients surveyed said they would pursue additional services if they had ways to pay.1

In presenting additional services to patients, avoid line-item selling. Instead, package all recommended services and offerings into a complete treatment plan focused on the desired outcome. To help patients manage payments and treatment, pair the treatment plan with financing options that spread costs into predictable monthly payments.

Address Patient Financing Concerns Early — With Consistent Follow-Up

Affordability is a common barrier for patients considering plastic surgery and cosmetic services. Consistent follow-up and early financing information can help patients move forward. Practices can reduce cost friction by responding quickly to inquiries, keeping follow-up consistent and introducing payment options early — before the first consultation whenever possible.

When patients and clients receive clear expectations around next steps, pricing factors and pay-over-time options up front, they may arrive more prepared, remain engaged through scheduling and feel more confident selecting a treatment plan that fits their goals and budget. Over time, this approach can help reduce lost leads, support stronger show rates and improve the likelihood that consultations convert into procedures and ongoing services.
